Weekly Centralised trainingKumite/組み手 (sparring)
Renshinkan/鎌心館 dōjō
Honbu dōjō/本部道場 (Headquarters Training hall)

Throwback to active-practitioner casual-competitor days.

This is one of the very few video recording of Jiyu Kumite/自由組み手 (free sparring) training. Back in the days before becoming a Karate instructor and was when I was seriously competing, and training sessions were taken extremely seriously, unfortunately, smartphones weren’t a thing yet.

By this time of this recording, I was in the early years as a Karate instructor and retired from competing seriously on a national level, but still actively trains and casually compete.

Here, we would randomly transition from jigeikō/地稽古 (field/true training; objective is not to win but to practice techniques and tactics) to shiai geikō/試合稽古 (practice match; objective is not to win but like a competition match) and reverse. Though we train seriously, but also joke around amongst long-time peers. Enjoy.

Sensei Zad Datu competes in Veteran Individual Kata & Kumite Category

I recently participated in the Veteran Categories of the 23rd Milo Open Karate Championship for both Kata and Kumite (sparring) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysa. For this championship, the Veteran Categories is for ages 35 years old and above. The official age for Veteran Cateogries in Kata in WKF is 45 years old and above

Milo Open Karate Championship is an international event, and it was announced in the opening cermony that it held the the Malaysian record of most participants in a single sporting event the year before with over 1,000 participants. This year there were over 2,000 participants.

Representing the Malaysian Association of Shito-ryu Karate-do (M.A.S.K.) as Team Manager and Athlete, to my luck, I landed in the finals for both Kata and Kumite Veteran Categories. Proud to say my oponent in the Kata Finals is a felow team mate and peer from the very same team (M.A.S.K.), whereas my opponent in the Kumite Finals is the current National Coach and former National Team Elite squad. I achieved first (1st) place for Kata and second (2nd) place for Kumite.

Below are video recordings of all my bouts.

Announcement: KarateTTDI Expansion, MobileApp, KarateDatu Calendar

We have a number of exciting news!

Update #1: Expansion of KarateTTDI, new intake (Aug 2024) at Sinaran TTDI condominium.

We will be opening a second dōjo KaratetTTDI at Sinaran TTDI condo (near the pasar malam) that will be open to all, and not just residents.

Click here for class and registration details.

View the dōjo page here.

For existing students:

  • There will be no change to monthly fees for existing students as of now.
  • We will be bringing in one confirmed new instructor, and we're searching for one more.
  • There will be a total of three (3) available classes in a week, but for where each student attend only two (2) classes:
    • One (1) class remains in Kiara Park Condo dōjo, which is Tuesday nights, 6.30-8.3.pm.
    • Two (2) classes in the new dōjo, Sinaran TTDI, that are:
      • Thursday nights, 6.30-8.30pm
      • Saturday mornings, 9.30-11.30am
    • New students will be attending both the classes in a week at Sinaran TTDI dōjo.
    • Existing students will be attending:
      • one (1) class in a week in Kiara Park Condominium, and;
      • the second (2nd) class in a week will be at Sinaran TTDI where you choose between Thursday night and Saturday morning.
    • You have the option to have a third (3rd) class in a week with extra payment.
  • The reasoning for the added instructor is to accommodate to the extra classes in maintaining our 2-2-2 formula (2 instructors/class; 2 hrs/class; 2 classes/week) that has proven to produce quality results.
  • The new instructor(s) will have a fixed attendance per week, whereas Sensei Zad and Nik will be rotating to ensure that at least one of them are present for every class.
  • Kihon+Kata and Kumite training will no longer be fixed by the class day of the week. Instead, class day of the week will alternate between Kihon+Kata and Kumite every week. It is structure such that which ever combination of classes the students attend, there will be a 50-50% balance between Kihon+Kata and Kumite
