Kata Assessment

This is a guide for my students to learn how to assess each other's kata as well as their own as a route to self-learning. Below are the categories when assessing a kata performance:

Categories Points to consider
Embusen (kata path of movement)
  • direction & angle
  • correct/mix-up of techniques
Te-waza & Geri-waza (hand and kick techniques)
  • structure upon completion
  • trajectory of technique
  • power & speed
Tachi-waza (stance techniques)
  • structure/measurement
  • stability & balance
  • consistency throughout kata
  • use of hips
Ido-kihon (movement basics)
  • order of motion of leg, arm and torso
  • height of stance
  • speed & sudden stop
  • balance upon stop
Hyoshi (timing)
  • speed, but don't rush
Chakugan (gaze)
  • own's eye level
  • turn of the head
Others/Summary
  • effort
  • confidence
  • what to focus on next

All the categories above apart from 'Embusen (kata path of movement)' can also be used as a guide to assess Kihon practices.
