The Noble Discipline – to concentrate on cultivating oneself to become a well-rounded, respectful individual. The person who is able to accomplish this as well as to exercise good manners in all situations with self-discipline and respect, who is able to assume accountability for one’s actions, and to keep one’s integrity as to set an example for others, is considered a Shitō-ryū practitioner

五道心 Go Dō Shin

(Shitō-Ryū's) Five Way Spirit

一、初心忘れるなかれ 意志 Hitotsu- Ishi. Shoshin wasureru nakare.

One- Determination. Never forget the spirit of first beginning.

一、礼儀怠るなかれ 道徳 Hitotsu- Dō toku. Reigi okutaru nakare.

One- Morality. Never neglect courtesy and etiquette.

一、努力怠るなかれ 発展 Hitotsu- Hatten. Doryoku okutaru nakare.

One- Development. Never neglect effort.

一、常識かけるなかれ 常識 Hitotsu- Jō shiki. Jo shiki kakeru nakare.

One- Common sense. Never lose common sense.

一、和乱すなかれ 平和 Hitotsu-Heiwa. Wa midasu nakare.

One- Peace. Never disturb harmony.
