(Shitō-ryū's) Five Principles of Defence
rakka | 落花 | Falling Petals - hard blocking of direct impact into the attack with the intention to hurt the attacker; “falling petals” refers to the effect when the trunk of a tree is met with a tremendous force. |
ryūsui | 流水 | Running Water; Stream - soft blocking by absorbing the attack and re-directing in a fluid movement. |
teni | 転位 | Transportation; Dislocation; Rearrangement - avoiding your opponent’s attack using evasive body movement of stepping, shifting or turning away. |
kusshin | 屈伸 | Elasticity - a reflexive darting or springing out-and-in body shifting motion from any angle as to avoid followed by an immediate attack. |
hangeki | 反撃 | Counterattack; Counteroffensive; Counterblow - responding to your opponent's attack with a decisive counterattack for where you use an attack as a defence. |

de ashi | 出足 | kar. stepping straight in; lit. protruding leg Refers to the stepping action you take when moving the leg forward or to the side. |
hiki ashi | 引き足 | kar. stepping straight back; lit. pulling leg Refers to the stepping action you take when you move your leg backwards. |
yori ashi | 寄り足 | kar. shufflingg; lit. forwarding leg; Refers to the stepping action you take when you move the body position forward, backward or to the side without changing the position of both feet. |
mawari ashi | 回り足 | lit. rotating leg; Refers to the stepping action you take when you move the body in a circular direction, regardless of how big or small the movements are. |
tobi ashi | 跳び足 | lit. jumping leg; Refers tot the stepping action you take when you change the body location by jumping |
足捌き Ashi Sabaki / 転補発足 Tenpo Hassoku
lit. & kar. Footwork / lit. departure of the feet/leg

ayumi ashi | 歩み足 | kar. walking leg Note: interchangeable with de ashi. |
tsugi ashi | 次足 | lit. sequencing leg Lead-leg remains while rear-leg slides forward without passing over the leading leg, followed by the lead-leg sliding forward, hence ends in the same stance as the start. |
hiraki ashi | 寄り足 | lit. unfolding leg; Footwork which involves movements to the side. |
okuri ashi | 送り足 | lit. sending off leg; Lead-leg remains while the rear-leg slides forward passing/crossing over the lead-leg slightly without changing the position of the body, followed by the lead-leg immediately sliding forward, hence ends in the same stance as the start. |
kōsa ashi | 交差足 | lit. crossing leg; Note: interchangeable with okuri ashi. |
