kime 決め power; focus – instantaneous power, speed and tensing at the correct moment during a technique

kamae 構え posture (e.g. in martial arts); pose; style; stance
kikai 機会chance; opportunity
yomi 読み perception
aizuki 相突き kar. attack at the same time (lit. mutual punch)
sen initiative (lit. former; previous; old; first move; opening move)
Go no Sen 後の先后の先 Post-Initiative – seizing the initiative later; counterattacking immediately after avoiding your opponent attacks and exposes him/herself
Sen no Sen 先の先 Pre-Initiative – seizing the initiative earlier; attacking as your opponent attacks and exposes him/herself while avoiding his/her attack
Sensen no Sen 先先の先 Pre Pre-Initiative – seizing the initiation of the initiative earlier; attacking as your opponent mentally but not yet physically commits an attacks
Ikken hissatsu 一拳必殺 One Fist, Certain Kill – to ‘kill’ or temporarily disable an opponent with a single attack
Karate ni sente nashi 空手に先手無 Karate does not include the first move
Shin Gi Tai 心技体 Mind-Technique-Body - The three (3) aspects to consider when training any martial art (or any physical discipline): (i) Mind (discipline, respect, attitude, commitment, etc.), (ii) Techniques (fundamentals, footwork, angles, defences, breathing, etc.), and (iii) Body (warm up, body structure, physical fitness).
Shuhari 守破離 Obey-Digress-Separate – the three stages (3) stages of learning mastery: (i) the fundamentals, (ii) breaking with tradition, and (iii) parting with traditional wisdom.

一、誠の道お守る事 Hitotsu- Makoto no michi o mamoru koto

Gentlemen’s/Noblemen’s Fist – to concentrate on cultivating oneself to become a well-rounded, respectful individual. The person who is able to accomplish this as well as to exercise good manners in all situations with self-discipline and respect, who is able to assume accountability for one’s actions, and to keep one’s integrity as to set an example for others, is considered a Shitō-ryū practitioner.

Rakka 落花 Falling Petals
The way of defence whereby one confronts the opponent’s attack directly and with strength. The analogy whereby the attack is like the falling flower and the defence is like the earth; which is unmoving or without avoidance. It means that the attitude to receive the opponent's attack with strength and without retreat.
Ryūsui 流水 Running Water; Stream
The way of defence whereby one diverts the opponent’s attack by redirecting the opponent’s energy, similar to a river flowing around a boulder. Parry the attack while rotating the body to bypass the opponent. It is the attitude of defence.
Teni 転位 Dislocation; Transportation; Rearrangement
lit. bending and stretching (exercise); flexing and extending
The way of defence that uses flexibility of posture against the opponent's attack.
Retraction (屈 Kutsu) - The defence that uses the power that is created when the posture retracts.
Expansion (伸; Shin'ichi) - The defence that uses the power that is created when the posture expands.
Kusshin 屈伸 Elasticity
kar. Body Shifting
The way of defence by avoiding the opponent's attack. For Jodan attack- bob the head to the left or right, or drop the hip and duck. For Chudan attack- avoid the attack by shifting the body to left or right.
Hangeki 反撃 Counterattack; Counteroffensive; Counterblow
The way of defence by avoiding the opponent's attack with an attitude of Aizuki (相突き; mutual punch; attack at the same time).

hiki ashi 引き足 kar. stepping straight back (lit. pulling leg/foot)

Note: A set of five paired/partnered drill of choreographed combination techniques unique to Shitō-ryū curriculum and developed by Mabuni Kenwa that based on techniques found in Heian/Pinan kata, one combination per kata, that respectively that applies the principle of Yo Ryū Bi (用流美; Use Flow Beauty).
Hiji ate Goho 肘当て五歩 Five Direction Elbow Strike
Note: An exercise considered to be a kata unique Shitō-ryū curriculum that uses the five different hiji ate (肘当; elbow strikes).
